Hermes Agent Guide: Setup, Memory and Phone Access
Get started with Hermes Agent using official downloads, model setup, a small test task, memory checks, and supported ways to reach your agent from a phone.

This Hermes Agent guide takes you from choosing the official setup route to checking a useful first result. If you are still deciding whether the product fits, start with our Hermes Agent review.
Before you begin: use an account and project you are authorized to access, a small non-sensitive sample, and a clear stopping point. Installation instructions belong on the device or environment you choose; reading this guide does not install anything.
Official downloads and mobile access
For phone use, the documented messaging gateway is the clearest verified route. We have not verified an official standalone Nous iOS app. Android/Termux is a separate advanced option, not a promise of a standard Play Store app.
Check processor and OS support before installing.
Use the supported installer for your platform.
No standalone official Nous iOS store app was verified for this guide.
Messaging access is an option; Termux is an advanced, limited-support route.
How to get started with Hermes Agent
1. Select a supported installation route
Open the official Hermes Desktop page for Mac or Windows, or follow the installation documentation for command-line use. The detailed platform-support page matters for processor architecture and packaging. Avoid assuming that every download route works on every Mac or Linux distribution.
2. Connect a model provider
Use hermes setup for guided configuration or hermes model to review the selected model route. Pick one provider for the first trial and check where its usage is billed. Do not add routing, fallback models, or extra tools until a basic chat succeeds.
3. Verify one plain conversation
Start Hermes and ask a simple question that needs no external account. If it cannot answer, troubleshoot authentication, the selected model, and account allowance first. A successful installation message alone does not demonstrate working inference.
4. Prepare a small project workspace
Create a sample folder containing a few non-sensitive notes. Specify the folder, expected output, and actions to avoid. If you use a sandboxed execution backend, confirm what files it can actually see before assuming it has access to your local documents.
5. Test memory deliberately
Run the example briefing prompt, then begin another session with revised input. Check both what was retained and what changed. Keep durable preferences short and inspect them when the agent repeatedly makes the same mistake.
6. Add phone access through a supported channel
The documented messaging gateway connects to services such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp. Start from hermes gateway setup after local chat works. Follow the specific channel instructions and keep the host available. A messaging app is the interface; Hermes still runs on its configured machine.
7. Schedule only after the manual task works
Use the same small task repeatedly before making it automatic. Specify the input location, output destination, frequency, and cancellation condition. Check the first scheduled result and account usage rather than assuming a saved routine is correct.
A practical first task
On the second run, add one new blocker and remove one completed item from the source notes. Check that Hermes reports the current state rather than simply repeating the previous brief. Ask it to explain which persistent preference it reused and correct anything that should not have been saved.
Example prompt to adapt
From these sample project notes, create a weekly brief with Completed, Blocked, and Next sections. Cite the source filename for every claim. Remember only that I prefer this three-section format; ask before storing client details. Do not change the notes or send the brief.
What a good result looks like
- The deliverable matches the requested scope and uses the supplied inputs.
- Claims or changes have evidence you can inspect, including source links or relevant checks.
- The agent explains anything it could not verify instead of presenting assumptions as completed work.
- No unrequested external action is treated as part of the task.
Common problems and what to check
Hermes starts but gives no useful response
Recheck the selected provider and model. The quickstart separates basic chat from gateway and optional tool setup for a reason.
It remembers an outdated preference
Correct the preference explicitly and inspect saved context before rerunning. Do not stack contradictory instructions and hope the newest one always wins.
You cannot find an official iPhone app
Use the official desktop and messaging documentation below. We have not verified a standalone Nous iOS store app; a similarly named listing is not sufficient evidence.
Make the next run easier
Keep a short record of the input, output, correction time, and any usage charge. Repeat the same small task with one changed input before increasing the scope. If you cannot tell whether a result is correct, improve the acceptance checks before delegating a larger job.
Sources and editorial approach
