What is Claude Code?

Anthropic documents Claude Code across the terminal, editor integrations, desktop, and web. It can read a codebase, edit files, and run development commands within the available environment. That makes it a tool for acting on a software project, rather than simply producing a code snippet to paste elsewhere.

Where it could be useful

Try it on an error with a reproducible input and an observable result. For example, ask it to find why a form accepts an invalid value, add a focused regression check, and correct the behavior. Keep the expected output explicit so the agent is solving the actual problem rather than optimizing for a broad request to improve quality.

Claude Code pros and cons

Pros

  • Works across files and development commands
  • CLAUDE.md supports durable project guidance
  • Official terminal, editor, desktop, and mobile access paths

Cons

  • Tests and context still need to be supplied or maintained
  • Costs vary with account route and task size
  • Confident explanations can still accompany incorrect code

The tradeoff to understand

Project context helps, but instructions are not proof of correctness. CLAUDE.md can describe conventions and checks; it cannot make an unavailable test service work or resolve an ambiguous product decision. Inspect the result when the agent appears certain, especially around dependencies, authentication, and behavior outside the original request.

Costs and access

Claude Code access can come through supported subscription, Console, or provider routes. Billing and limits depend on the route. Anthropic’s cost documentation distinguishes subscription allowances from API token accounting. Use the current account usage information and a small real task to evaluate the expense; a long unattended run is a poor first cost experiment.

SHL verdict: who should consider it?

Claude Code is a useful candidate when you already have, or are willing to build, a review-and-test habit. It is less suitable as an unchecked production operator. Compare it with Codex using the same repository issue, the same scope, and the same acceptance checks rather than judging one polished demo against another.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code the same as ordinary Claude chat?

Claude Code is a coding workflow with project and tool access. The interface and permissions determine what it can do with a repository.

Where do I download the mobile app?

Use Claude by Anthropic from the official store links. Claude Code sessions are reached from within that app.

Should I choose Claude Code or Codex?

Try the same small issue in a controlled project and compare correctness, review effort, access, and cost. There is no universal winner for every repository.
